Oregon City Council is considering a proposed ordinance that would set the maximum age requirement to 35 for those who want to join the police department, but will grant waivers under certain conditions.

Under the Ohio Revised Code, unless provided by ordinance, the maximum age for a new officer is 35.

Bridge and culvert load rating surveys are under way across Ottawa County this summer.

“It’s part of a federal mandate to be expedited in the wake of the Minnesota tragedy,” Ottawa County Engineer Dave Brunkhorst said.

In August 2007, an eight-lane bridge clogged with evening rush-hour traffic buckled and sent vehicles plunging into the Mississippi River. Thirteen died and about 145 were injured.

For many parents of children with disabilities, seeing their child participate in team sports like baseball may be a distant and forgotten dream. For others, providing the opportunity to kids with disabilities to experience the joy and camaraderie of baseball is just another day in the park.

Pam Baldwin, of Oregon, knows all too well what baseball and being a part of team has meant for her son Zach.

The Ottawa County Commissioners would forgive the balance of an outstanding loan to the county agricultural society - the organization that conducts the annual county fair - if the fair’s board of directors implements stronger fiscal management and oversight practices.

But the commissioners say in a June 14 letter to the agricultural society that they are limited by state law in how they can let the fairgrounds be used as loan collateral, which the fair board had requested at an earlier meeting with the commissioners.

The children of Ohio need our help and by participating in the modern-day abolition movement, each of us can do our part to end human trafficking. Generally, human traffickers prey on the most vulnerable in society, they exploit them, and they keep any profits from the forced sexual conduct or labor.  Human trafficking is today’s form of slavery, and globally more slaves exist today than during any other time in history.
