Federal and state wildlife officials working in conjunction with academic researchers announced six water samples taken from Sandusky and north Maumee bays in Lake Erie tested positive for the presence of Asian carp environmental DNA in Michigan and Ohio waters.

If the carp find their way into Lake Erie, it could affect the fishing and boating industries and the local economy, said Sandy Bihn, executive director for Lake Erie Waterkeeper, Inc.

Demolition has begun on the Genoa High School gymnasium.

The court and its facilities won’t be available for student use until Dec. 6, according to school superintendent Dennis Mock.

Construction will affect five girls basketball games and three boys games on the fall schedule for the 2012-13 school year, he added. The athletic director will schedule those games as away events.

A Curtice family welcomed a group of very special guests who dropped – or rather, rolled in for lunch July 18. Tammy and Scott Henegar waited with anticipation for the arrival of the JettRide – a cross-country cycle tour for teens to raise funds and awareness to fight Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

It’s a cause close to the Henegars’ heart. Two years ago, their son Braedan, now 6, was diagnosed with Duchenne – a progressive muscle disorder that causes loss of muscle function and independence.

Chamber raising funds for new playground

Plans for a new playground at Pearson Metropark call for more than the typical swings and slides. The new landscape will have those elements, of course, but the Pearson Playscape will offer much more.

New playgrounds in the Metroparks are being designed with unique, interactive sculptures created by a local company to reflect the natural environments of the parks. At Pearson, the new playground will incorporate sculptures of trees and animals that are enticing to children and educational at the same time.

The Oregon school board last Tuesday voted 5-0 for P.J. Kapfhammer to be president of the board.

Dick Gabel was president until he resigned recently due to health issues. The board also voted for board member Diane Gadus, who had been acting president, as vice president of the board.

“I love this district and have spent my entire life in this community,” Kapfhammer said in a press release issued by the school district.  “The schools have been good to me and helped prepare me for success as a businessman.  I am honored to be elected President of the Oregon City Schools Board of Education.  We now have a new board and I am looking forward to providing the leadership necessary to move this district forward.”
