The Oregon school board, after voting for raises last year for Superintendent Dr. Mike Zalar and a dozen  administrators at a time when busing for Clay High School students was eliminated, had reasoned that the pay hikes were needed to keep high quality individuals in the district.

The board last August had unanimously approved the raises for 12 administrators, with Zalar getting the biggest amount from $116,964 to $130,221 per year.

With Memorial Day approaching, it's important for Americans to appreciate the immeasurable freedoms we enjoy living in the United States.

Waite High School is doing its part May 24, hosting the 97th Annual Memorial Day Program, “Courage Knows No Color.” The event will feature Dr. Harold Brown, a former member of the Tuskegee Airmen, a squadron in the United States Army that served the country during World War II.

If the township gives the nod, the Lake Township Cemetery could be the setting for pivotal scenes of an independent feature film set for production next month.

Barbara Troy, the film’s director and producer who lives in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan, has asked township officials for permission to film at the cemetery on Walbridge Road.

Walbridge Village Council has approved the hiring of its police chief to fill the vacant administrator’s position.

Council unanimously approved a motion Wednesday to appoint Ken Frost to the position on a temporary basis.

A paragraph in a letter to the editor May 14 from Joann Schiavone about fracking was inadvertently left out:

Republicans and drillers will say it will provide 870,000 jobs by 2015. Ask them to show you the car-fax. Just remember residents what you will transform if you agree to fracking on your property. Gas tankers clog the two-lane roads and drilling rigs dot the horizon. Large water tanks will be needed to help people whose water goes bad. These oil and gas companies will paint a picture for you, and once you sign that lease for them to drill you have put your and your family at risk – making perhaps $81,000 – but now you have a home you can’t sell for $25,000. Do the math. Our Congressman Bob Latta of the 5th Congressional District is for this. Remember this when you vote.
