An analysis by FirstEnergy into what caused cracking in a concrete shield building at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station is scheduled to be completed by the end of February, a spokesperson for the utility said, adding FirstEnergy is moving ahead with its application to extend the facility’s operating license.

The power station was shut down as scheduled in October to install a new reactor head when cracks were found in the shield building while workers were cutting into the building to remove the old reactor head.

The Oregon school board is considering establishing regular committee of the whole meetings as a way to thoroughly discuss issues facing the district before voting at upcoming board meetings.

“As you can see this evening, we’re having a problem of communicating all the information that is brought forth at the regular business meeting at the school board,” Diana Gadus, vice president of the school board, said at a board meeting on Feb. 21.

The Oregon City Schools District is facing an $11 million deficit in 2016, according to Treasurer Jane Fruth at a school board meeting last Tuesday.

The district will have to pass a levy before then to avoid the deficit. She said.

The president of Walbridge Village Council says the vote by him and two other councilmembers to not excuse the absence of Mayor Dan Wilczynski from the Feb. 15 council meeting reflects an attempt to improve communication between council and the mayor’s office.

Ed Kolanko, who, as council president assumes the responsibilities of acting mayor when the mayor is out of town on personal business, said last week he’s repeatedly asked Mayor Wilczynski to provide his business travel schedule for him and others on council.

The Village of Genoa has applied for a solid waste management district grant to help pay for a pirate ship play structure at a municipal playground.

The structure, created by the Akron-firm Bright Idea Shops, cost about $7,000. The village would be expected to pay for about half the cost, said Village Administrator Kevin Gladden.
