The Oregon school board last Tuesday eliminated eight classified positions as part of the closure of Wynn Elementary School.
Those positions include a school nurse, cafeteria employees, and a playground monitor.
The Genoa School District has begun a wave of extensive spending cuts, including the loss of one teacher this year and a custodian next year.
And one of the biggest changes families will have to endure is a new charge for all-day, everyday kindergarten beginning in fiscal year 2013. Parents of kindergarteners will have to fork out $100 per month beginning that school year for students to attend all day classes.
Genoa High School students will return next fall to a newly-remodeled science lab.
Genoa Board of Education members recently approved three contracts for the renovation that will take place this summer after the 2010-11 school year ends, according to treasurer Bill Nye. Completion is set for Aug. 26.
Probate court starting guardian program
Judge David Woessner said trained volunteers will provide guardian service for persons who’ve been declared incompetent or who are unable to take care of themselves.
A contract bid for $60,782 approved by the Woodmore school board last week to repair the roof of the elementary school building is an example of the expenses the board and administration are trying to avoid and why a bond issue for a new building will be on the November ballot, Superintendent John Fernbaugh says.
He plans to meet May 23 with representatives of the Ohio School Facilities Commission to discuss the district’s options for leveraging OSFC funding for a new elementary building if voters approve a bond issue.
