Under a proposed consent agreement with the Ohio Attorney General and Environmental Protection Agency, CSX Transportation, Inc. will pay $350,000 in civil penalties and related costs for spills into Cedar Creek in Lake Township and in other Ohio waterways.

Arcadis U.S., Inc., which was contracted by CSX for cleaning up after two train accidents, was charged with causing discharges into the Cuyahoga River,  and will pay a civil penalty of $60,000.

The Genoa School District has begun a wave of extensive spending cuts, including the loss of one teacher this year and a custodian next year.

And one of the biggest changes families will have to endure is a new charge for all-day, everyday kindergarten beginning in fiscal year 2013. Parents of kindergarteners will have to fork out $100 per month beginning that school year for students to attend all day classes.

Genoa High School students will return next fall to a newly-remodeled science lab.

Genoa Board of Education members recently approved three contracts for the renovation that will take place this summer after the 2010-11 school year ends, according to treasurer Bill Nye.  Completion is set for Aug. 26.

Oregon City Council approved a three year contract with the Oregon Police Command Officers/Fraternal Order of Police, and the Ohio Labor Council at a meeting last week.

“This is the first in a step of labor agreements we will be dealing with this year,” City Administrator Mike Beazley said to council. “It is important to note that in a time when we are trying to hold the line on expenses, both sides did a good job in recognizing the fiscal challenges facing the region, and agreed to a labor agreement with no wage increases the first year and wage reopeners in years one, two and three.”

Oregon City Council last week backed a resolution in support of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) and urged the Ohio Legislature to restoring funding to its budget.

The OCC has a current operating budget of approximately $8.5 million per year. However, under the proposed biennial budget, the OCC’s budget would be reduced to $4.1 million per year.
