The Oregon school board on Tuesday voted 3-1 to approve salary hikes in a new three-year contract with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE), a union that represents classified staff in the school district.
Oregon school board member Jeff Ziviski voted against the contract, saying after the meeting that the raises may have violated a promise made to voters last November that revenue from a proposed 3.95 mill operating levy would not be used for salary increases.

The 51st German-American Festival is set to take place Aug. 26-28 at Oak Shade Grove, 3624 Seaman Rd., in Oregon.
According to Jack Renz, G.A.F. chairman, more than 30,000 people attended last year's event and organizers are expecting more this year.
“The Northwest Ohio community has truly embraced our festival, and we’ve been thrilled to share our German culture and traditions with them for such a long time” Renz said. “Everyone has such a great time every year.”
According to Renz, whose father was chairman in 1987, the festival committee decided to keep up with the pace set by the late chairman, Tim Pecsenye, who served for several years. Pecsenye passed away in February.
The Oregon City Schools District plans to install window air conditioners in the classrooms by next year.
“I’m very excited about this initiative,” said Superintendent Hal Gregory at a recent school board meeting. “I think it’s long overdue in coming. It’s something we all support and it’s really a low cost solution to a big, big problem.”
There will be a total of 200 units installed in the high school, intermediate and elementary schools once the project is completed, according to Dean Sandwich, director of business affairs in the district.
By last Wednesday, the day before school started, air conditioners were already installed at Clay.
