An Oregon man will finally receive his Silver Star 67 years after his commanding officer recommended he be honored for his bravery during World War II.
Earl Geoffrion, 94, will receive the Silver Star at a ceremony this Friday at 3:00 pm at the Toledo Veterans Clinic on Glendale. Marcy Kaptur, U.S. Congresswoman from the Ninth District, will present the medal.
Geoffrion’s long wait is a result of lost paperwork and bureaucratic red tape. Over the last eight years, public officials including Rep. Kaptur, former Oregon Mayor Marge Brown and Rufus Broadaway, the commanding officer who witnessed Geoffrion’s bravery and recommended him for the Silver Star, pushed for the long-overdue recognition.

Marketing Operations Manager John McNamara promises that when Hollywood Casino Toledo opens just after Memorial Day, it will provide an experience you cannot get at casinos elsewhere, including Detroit and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

That’s why the casino will be marketed as far away as Fort Wayne, Indiana to the west and Sandusky to the east. McNamara has already heard from Michigan residents that say they look forward to coming here because Toledo’s casino will be 100 percent smoke-free.

Former Presidential Candidate Herman Cain will join Republican Congressional Candidate Samuel Wurzelbacher at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds this Friday, February 24 at 8:30 p.m. Wurzelbacher became an overnight sensation during the 2008 presidential election when he challenged then candidate Barak Obama about his tax proposals.

Actually it was Obama’s answer, “wouldn’t you like to see the money spread around?” that created most of the furor.

A Northwood man living in the Oregon Road area is hoping more of his neighbors will pay attention to their properties.

That’s because rats may start to take up residence in their yards.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the Wood County Health Department has come to his yard to drop poisoned bait in holes burrowed by the rats along his privacy fence.

Genoa’s chief of police believes his department is close to solving recent home burglaries.

The investigation continues into the nighttime break-ins which occurred about a month ago, said chief Bob Bratton. “I think we are close to solving one of them here soon,” he said Monday morning.
