A member of a citizens’ committee that recommended two revisions to the Northwood city charter blasted council at a July 14 council meeting for failing to place them on the ballot for this fall.

Bill Garner believes in angels. 

On May 10, Bill, encountered three real-life angels who helped save his brother’s life right on the side of Woodville Road.

On that morning, Bill and his brother Jim, both of Toledo, had been helping a family friend clear out a barn on Camper Road in Genoa.

Genoa councilman Eric Hise resigned effective immediately at the end of Monday night’s regular  meeting.

Hise, who was just over a year and a half into his four-year term, said in a telephone interview after the meeting that personal health issues forced his decision. He has been struggling with severe back problems for several months. As a result, Hise said he anticipates surgery and rehabilitation in the near future that will prevent him from attending meetings and maintaining a concentrated focus on village business, he said. He already retired from his bonding company job late last year but retains part ownership in a local bar.

Although the lowest bids for road resurfacing projects in Lake Township have come in under estimates, the township trustees may proceed with only two of four planned projects due to a tight budget in the road department.

Dan McLargin, roads supervisor, earlier this month recommended contracts be awarded to Gerken Paving, Inc., Napoleon, which had submitted the lowest bids for resurfacing portions of Lakehurst Drive and Latcha, Ayers, and Isch roads.

The Press news staff, which includes news editors Kelly J. Kaczala and Larry Limpf, assistant editor Tammy Walro, sports editor Pat Eaken, and writer Melissa Burden, won first place in the breaking news category for coverage of a killer tornado that swept through Millbury and Lake Township on June 5, 2010.
