The county fairs that take place throughout the United States during the summer represent for those of us country folk living in Middle America, at just $5 per person, the opportunity to partake in events ranging from livestock auctions to pie-eating contests to demolition derbies.

The week of July 18-24 represented that for those us living in and around Ottawa County.

With a struggling economy on the minds of voters, two area school districts will attempt to pass operating levies Tuesday to offset the loss of state aid and other revenue as well as preventing future spending cuts.

The administration and school board of the Lake Local School District are asking voters for approval of a 4.75-mill, continuing levy while voters in the Benton-Carroll-Salem School District will decide a 3.9-mill, 5-year emergency property tax issue.

Oregon City Schools announced an agreement has been reached with the Oregon City Federation of Teachers, saving the district over $3 million during the course of the next three years.

“It’s been a culmination of a long process,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Zalar said. “We got started late in the spring and it’s carried over into the summer. We’ve kept the board informed along the way regarding the terms and the conditions and some of the language that has been negotiated.

Members of the Oregon City Federation of Teachers approved a three-year contract on Tuesday that will save money for the Oregon City Schools District.

“We had a general membership meeting early in the morning on Tuesday and ratified a tentative agreement,” said David Shafer, president of the 250-member union.

Shafer said he could not provide details of the agreement because the school board has not yet approved it. It is expected to go before the board next Wednesday.

Excessive heat and humidity forced the temperatures toward 100 degrees and the heat index to 115 last week, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

It is no different for animals.

After the National Weather Service in Cleveland issued an excessive heat warning during most of the Ottawa County Fair, keeping animals cool became a priority.
