Toledo Public Schools is asking voters to approve Issue 20, a 4.9 mill 10-year operating levy. The levy would cost the owner of a $60,000 home $90.04 annually and the owner of a $100,000 home $150 per year.

Superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko’s said TPS had an unexpected savings in expenditures of $8 million, but must go to the ballot. He said no additional revenue has been received, and the deficit for next year is still projected at $4 million.

He added that because of the $8 million savings, the board chose to lower the levy request from 6.9 mills to 4.9 mills. Pecko said TPS has not had an increase in operating expenses since 2001.

Pecko said savings from a transformation plan, fewer students attending charter and parochial schools and a bond refinancing has allowed the district to reduce the amount of this levy request.

The Ottawa County sheriff is updating policing contracts his department has with Allen and Portage townships.

Sheriff Steve Levorchick recently had a meeting with Portage Township trustees and has been in talks with the Allen Township trustees, he said. His plan, he said, is to review the contracts held under his new leadership and make any changes necessary. That review will include examining hours, compensation rates and other issues.

Levy collections have been negatively impacted by property reevaluations and reduced state replacement dollars, plus state and federal allocations have been reduced.

That is the common theme heard from many organizations which say they must go to the ballot this November to recoup lost funds or else the community suffers the consequences.

Gerken Paving, Inc., submitted the lowest of four bids for the resurfacing of Wagner Road – between East Broadway and Luckey Road – in Lake Township but the township trustees Tuesday opted to postpone awarding a contract for the project so the road supervisor can review the bids.

The domestic violence case against Joseph Kiss, Jr., chairman of the Jerusalem Township board of trustees, was terminated on “Call of the Prosecutor” (COP) on Monday, October 1, in Oregon Municipal Court.

Kiss was arrested for alleged domestic violence on Friday, July 13, by the Lucas County Sheriff’s Department.
