Nick Haupricht, chairman of Remembrance, Inc., is looking to take the next step at a military memorial honoring Lucas County Medal of Honor recipients on a pathway south of Cullen Park off North Summit Street.

There are at least seven stone memorials at the site, each bearing a plaque with Medal of Honor recipients’ names from a war in America’s history. Remembrance, Inc. had to raise nearly $100,000 for each stone to be erected.

Haupricht, a Vietnam veteran and chairman of Rememberance Inc., has been advocating for veteran’s rights for years, most recently pushing for changes in state law and hosting dinners for Medal of Honor recipients.

Included among the Medal of Honor recipients is Private Wilson Brown, who was with the 21st Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. He was one of the Andrews Raiders — 24 Union fighters who stole a Confederate train. Brown is interred at New Belleville Ridge Cemetery in Dowling, south of Perrysburg.

Ohio Sea Grant has released an updated version of its Lake Erie Shipwrecks & Maritime Tales brochure, a guide to shipwrecks along the Lake Erie coast for divers and snorkelers. The free guide is available from Ohio Sea Grant as well as from partner organizations and coastal Ohio visitor bureaus.

The brochure features 27 shipwrecks, stretching from Toledo to Conneaut. Each entry includes GPS coordinates, information on how to access the wreck site and a brief history of the ship. Partnerships with the Marine Archaeological Survey Team (MAST) and Cleveland Underwater Explorers (CLUE) also helped provide recommendations on how much diving experience the wrecks require, and whether mooring buoys are placed at a given wreck.

"The updated guide was developed because of a continued interest in exploring this unique aspect of Ohio and Lake Erie history," said Joe Lucente, Ohio Sea Grant Extension educator and one of the authors of the guide. Because of Lake Erie's shallow depth and often severe storms, more than 1,700 ships have sunk over the centuries and only about 300 have been found so far.

Job seekers, working professionals and hobbyists can gain valuable skills by enrolling in workshops at Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University's island campus on Lake Erie.

New this year are three wetland plant workshops, held back-to-back August 15-17, which are ideal for those who work in or are seeking work in botanical or wetland fields, such as the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources or environmental consulting companies. Day one of the workshop focuses on submerged and floating plants, while day two discusses characteristics and differences of Lake Erie Island wetland plants. Day three introduces participants to the Vegetation Index of Biotic Integrity for wetlands in Ohio, a tool used by agency personnel to assess wetland quality.

All three days are field-based workshops; lectures and labs take place in classrooms at the Kelleys Island Field Station, while field trips are planned to various preserves on Kelleys Island. The workshops are being led by Dr. James Bissell, curator of botany and director of natural areas at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
