So, you want to take back East Toledo from the transient renters, absentee landlords, negligent neighbors, thieves, vandals and drug pushers. Here’s your chance.

Three events, Global Youth Service Day, Get the Lead Out, and Initiative to Restore East Toledo are all about cleaning up and making others aware of safety and housing issues in the historic neighborhoods.

Initiative to Restore East Toledo meeting will be at 6 p.m. on March 31 at the Hungarian Club of Toledo, 224 Paine Avenue, with a presentation by Birmingham Development Corporation, One Voice for East Toledo, and Birmingham’s AmeriCorps member Kelly Dean. The plan is to engage and empower existing neighborhood leaders and identify new leaders in the Birmingham neighborhood.

About 200 persons attended a candle light vigil Wednesday for a Genoa girl killed in a car accident earlier in the week.

Students, community members, friends and members of Megan Kunich’s family, attended the vigil at the athletic complex on the campus of Genoa High School, where Megan, 15, was a student.

Cari Buehler, high school principal, said students Maddison Guthrie and Jenna Elliott selected songs and a poem for the event. Monica Metcalf, a parent of a Genoa student, and Cheryl Harris, a community member, also helped organize the vigil.

“Megan’s family was very appreciative of the community support,” Buehler said.

According to Clay Township Police Department reports, Megan was pronounced dead March 20 about 7:11 p.m. at the scene of the one-car crash.

Historian Richard J. Norgard grew up on the shores of Lake Erie — his boyhood home, “now long gone,” was located where Frisch’s Big Boy Restaurant sits in Port Clinton.

As a child, his father used to tell him about the “old slave ship” that burned offshore, less than a half mile from their home, on July 4, 1946. His dad watched the ship burn from their beach, and the story stayed with Norgard.

When Norgard landed his first job as a reporter and photographer for a local newspaper, he began collecting information about the “old slave ship,” which was really a historic sailing ship called the “Success.” He says the quest began as a hobby, then became a “passion, and finally, a writing career.”

Despite a fire on July 4, 1946, historian Richard J. Norgard says a lot remains of the sailing Ship Success today — the wreck is located in 15 feet of water directly offshore from the Route 163 and Route 2 highway cloverleaf near Jolly Roger’s restaurant.

The keel and ribs rise eight feet off the bottom and parts of the wreck and metal fittings are still found in the sand.

Norgard says the female figurehead was cut off while she sat in her final years at Lake Erie, and numerous wax figures once located in the hull during its museum days still pop up at locations around the world. He says a Michigan drinking establishment has the head of a wax figure sitting at the end of its bar, and guests entertainment themselves by placing a cigarette in its mouth.

A bill that would establish a national, but voluntary, standard for labeling of bio-engineered food products stalled Wednesday in the U.S. Senate when a cloture motion to end debate fell by one vote.

Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, who chairs the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, said the bill represents a “true compromise” and establishes a balance between consumers’ right to know and ensuring an even playing field in the marketplace.

Roberts’ proposal amends sections of the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 and preempts any state law requiring the labeling of food or seed that is genetically engineered. That provision is significant in the eyes of food producers and consumer groups as some states have had initiatives on the ballot requiring such labeling. Vermont, for example, has approved a labeling requirement set to go into effect in July.
