Members of Advocates for a Clean Lake Erie plan to continue their focus on Toledo officials as the group pushes to have Lake Erie’s western basin designated as an impaired watershed.

About 15 members of the environmental group picketed outside the East Toledo Family Center Wednesday night where Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson held a town hall meeting.

Mike Ferner, a coordinator with the group, said he’s puzzled why the city hasn’t asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the designation when the Lucas County commissioners and Oregon City Council have already sought the impaired listing.

The Oregon Recreation and Parks Committee recently met to discuss ways to improve recreation in the community.

Discussion focused on several issues, including obtaining state funds for the development of the lakefront.

The city administration has contacted the Ohio Department of Natural Resources about the possibility of getting state funding for future projects.

It only took one presentation by Joy Grayczyk to the East Toledo-Oregon Kiwanis Club, and they civic organization was impressed.

Members of the club took it upon themselves to nominate her for the Eastern Maumee Bay Chamber of Commerce’s Person of the Year, and judges, too, were impressed. Grayczyk was honored by the chamber with the POY award at the 23rd Annual Prism Award Ceremony at the National Museum of the Great Lakes Thursday night.

With approval from a Sandusky County budget panel, the Woodmore school board may soon have access to almost $185,000 for use on permanent improvement needs.

A resolution discussed last week by the board asks the Sandusky County Budget Commission for authorization to transfer “dormant bond funds” to the district’s budget funds for permanent improvements such as building and facility repairs, vehicles and equipment.

The resolution is scheduled to be on the agenda of the board’s regular meeting set for May 17. It states the balance of $184,498.75 is left over from a bond issue approved by voters in 1987.
