A resolution to begin the process of placing a millage request on the November ballot to fund emergency medical service in Lake Township will be on the agenda of the township trustees’ July 5 meeting, Mark Hummer, township administrator, said last week.

The township contracts with LifeStar for 24-hour service. The current contract will expire in April 2018.

Members of the Woodmore school board intend to fill the position of superintendent before the start of the coming school year, Corinna Bench, board president, said last week.

After a brief executive session, the school board Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution to accept the resignation of Robert Yenrick as superintendent.  He was scheduled to officially assume his duties on July 1.

The Toledo-Lucas County Metroparks’ first park with access to Lake Erie — Howard Farms in Jerusalem Township, is currently under construction.

Metroparks public relations director Scott Carpenter says Howard Farms is starting to look more like a park every day. He adds that it won’t be long and engineers will be allowing Lake Erie water to find its way into the newly constructed canals and waterways at Howard Farms.

Already, a second Metropark with waterfront access is in the planning stages, and like Howard Farms, it is on the east side of the Maumee River. The unnamed Metropark will occupy most of the 127-acre Marina District property — a former industrial site long overdue for development.

The Marina District has a history dating back to 1890, when old sketches show the land wasn’t even there — it was part of the Maumee River. Soon after, it was filled for industrial use, but in 1993, the property saw its’ last usage when a power generating plant closed.

The national matches will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I, known then as “The Great War,” on Monday, June 26, as the Civilian Marksmanship Program hosts the 2017 First Shot Ceremony at one of the key training facilities during the era – Camp Perry, near Port Clinton.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with a short concert by Ohio’s 122nd Army Band at 9:30 a.m. on the base’s Rodriguez Range and is free and open to public members of all ages.

The ceremony serves as the official opening of the National Trophy Pistol and Rifle Matches, which have assembled talented marksmen and women at the Camp Perry National Guard Training Facility since 1907. The National Matches will first fire on June 26 with the CMP Cup 4-Man Team rifle match and will conclude on July 29 with the National Rimfire Sporter rifle event – with many competitions in between.

Noah Durczynski had exactly 22 days this summer to stay with his parents in Oregon, decompress, and see friends and family before returning to the daily grind that is the United States Air Force.

Durczynski, a 2016 Clay graduate, is ready to enter his second year at the Air Force Academy, which is located in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was set to return on June 24 as a Cadet Third Class.

“I’ve been catching up on my sleep, but I’m ready to go back,” Durczynski said. “I miss home and stuff, but I’m ready to get back to it and keep moving on and going to the next step.”

Durczynski’s world is entirely different than the one he left behind a year ago. His new home is 6,035 feet above sea level in Colorado Springs, at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains. The Academy covers 18,500 acres and lies near glacier-carved Pikes Peak.
