Stritch terminates grid coach’s contract
Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:50

Cardinal Stritch High School has terminated the contract of newly hired head football coach Andre Hampton after an internal investigation of what the school administration is calling “illegal financial activity.”

The school, in a statement issued Thursday, said it was cooperating with the Oregon Police Department which was conducting an “ongoing investigation into the matter.”

School officials declined to comment further on the investigation.

Conrad Kolbow, who was the assistant varsity coach, was named as the new varsity coach, the school said.

School administrators and the athletic department met with parents and players Wednesday to inform them of the decision to terminate Mr. Hampton’s contract.

A former player for Ohio State, Mr. Hampton’s hiring was credited for inspiring interest in the Stritch football program among students at the school.

Mike Jamieson, a Stritch graduate and owner of ToledoSportsRadio.com, an internet company, commented on his talk show earlier this month that Mr. Hampton’s enthusiasm was being reflected in the eyes of Stritch players in summer camps.

The Rev. David Reinhart, Stritch president, said the new coach …”brings the attitude, skills, and enthusiasm that are always welcome at Stritch.”

When hired by Stritch, Mr. Hampton pledged to earn the respect of the players and said they will “…meet and exceed the high standards of excellence that will be demanded of them.”

After leaving Ohio State, he played and coached at Ohio Northern University where his teams set school records for wins in a season and reached the quarter finals of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

More recently, Mr. Hampton served as an assistant at Defiance College and Central Catholic High School.

Coach Kolbow has been an assistant coach for the Mighty Cardinals for the past three seasons and has served as an assistant football coach at Ottawa Hills and Rogers high schools.

Tony Beier was the head varsity coach at Stritch for two seasons before Mr. Hampton was hired.

In 2006, he was named coach of the year in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference.
