Lori Sodd has seen better days. In just six months, one of her three dogs ran away, her mother passed away, and her house burned to the ground.

Sodd, of East Toledo, was still grieving for her mom, who had died in January, when her house at 1306 Vinal Street caught fire on Sunday, April 26 at about 11:30 a.m.

Sodd was relaxing on her bed that day, playing a game on her cell phone, when her son Todd came into the bedroom to ask whether she had noticed the lights had flickered.

“He was thinking maybe it was the light bulb in a lamp in his bedroom,” Sodd recalled. But just moments after he left her room, she heard him scream `Our house is on fire.’”

After just completing his first year at Great Lakes Maritime Academy, Cox arrived this week in Toledo in style working on the school’s training ship, T/S State of Michigan. The ship, on the second week of an eight-week cruise of the Great Lakes, is providing him his first experience of life aboard ship.

Ottawa County Commissioner JoEllen Regal was expected to be released from the hospital sometime Wednesday following a medical emergency at her home over the weekend.

Regal was at her Bay Township home with her husband, Dave, when she began experiencing problems around 8 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and slumped to the floor.

Dave, who is a sheriff’s deputy as well as the Bay Township Fire Department chief, called for medical assistance and then performed CPR on his wife. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and an ambulance responded.

A Mercy St. Vincent’s Life Flight medical helicopter landed a short distance from their West Little Portage East home and then transported her to Toledo.

If the opinions of the Woodmore school board attorney and the Ottawa County prosecutor are correct regarding vacancies, the board may have violated state law last year when it appointed Corinna Bench to fill a seat left vacant by the resignation of Mike DeStazio.

According to board meeting minutes, it approved a resolution during its Aug. 25 special meeting to accept DeStazio’s resignation.

The board held a special meeting Sept. 2 but the agenda doesn’t mention the vacancy. During a special meeting on Sept. 9 the board went into executive session to interview Kelly O’Connor and Dan Hoppe for the open seat but took no action.

On Sept. 11, the board held another special meeting and went into executive session to interview James Kamman, Sean Rizor and Bench.

Edward Schimmel, a Northwood councilman, is running for mayor. An attorney, he is currently serving his second term on council.525EdSchimmel

He wants to draw new jobs to the city, address blighted residential and commercial properties, and improve communication between the city and residents.

“I was born and raised in Northwood,” said Schimmel. “This is where I went to school, where I operate my law practice, and where my wife and I are raising our family. My decision to run for mayor is predicated on making the city a more prosperous place to live and work. I want to help the city provide good government for the residents and the businesses that call our city home.”

Schimmel noted the impact the Great Recession has had on Northwood, which saw deep budget cuts and many vacant buildings due to failing businesses.
