 In keeping with its commitment to finding alternative energy sources and creating a greener world, the Toledo Zoo installed a residential-sized wind turbine Aug. 26.
The turbine will provide power to the new ticket booths in the zoo’s renovated Anthony Wayne Trail parking lot. Zoo officials also hope the installation will raise awareness about the need for environmental responsibility. Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak and Toledo City Council member Michael Collins attended the installation to lend their support for this project. The wind turbine is expected to generate 3,600-kilowatt hours per year for the zoo’s ticket booths. In addition, the zoo will install three solar panels on the ticket booths. All told, the steps are expected to reduce the zoo’s carbon footprint by
over 5,600 pounds annually. The Toledo Zoo committed to green construction practices in all of the capital improvement projects that are part of the Master Plan. Wind turbines and solar panels are among the many components of planned green building practices. In addition, the Zoo has used and will continue to implement geothermal technology, agriboard panel, recycled crushed concrete, natural lighting and rain gardens to lessen the facility’s overall impact on the environment.
