Through July 12, Schedel Arboretum & Gardens is exhibiting the Athena painters. The Athena Art Society, one of the two oldest women’s professional art organizations in the country, was founded in 1903 at the original Toledo Museum of Art by a group of 18 Toledo artists led, by Nina Spalding Stevens, wife of George W. Stevens.

Athena’s mission is to assist and encourage women in all branches of the visual arts. The society provides an annual scholarship to a promising female artist, a membership in Athena and an invitation to exhibit with our juried show.

Athena sponsors an award at the Toledo Area Artists Show, hosts an annual juried and non-juried exhibit for members and supports other arts organizations through affiliation with the Toledo Federation of Art Societies, the Art Library League and the Toledo Botanical Garden.

Athena members are active in the Toledo-area arts community, serving on boards, serving as jurors for shows, mentoring and giving demonstrations, programs and tours. They also aim to foster appreciation for art in the community, to encourage individual creativity and to support emerging artists at the formative stage of their careers.

The approximately 65 members of the Athena Art Society are outstanding award-winning artists in the greater Toledo area. The exhibit includes 41 works with a wide range of mixed media including water color, acrylic, ceramic, gouache, fused glass pastel over lithograph, oil and gouache/ink resist.

In addition to the works of the Athena painters, the Schedel gardens are also exhibiting bronze sculptor Barry Woods Johnston.

Johnston is providing the gardens with a one-man outdoor sculpture exhibit featuring 13 of his works. Brochure information is available at www.schedel-gardens.org/schedel/brochure/.

Through June, the new Brown Welcome center is featuring the artist from India collection, which showcases works exclusively from South and East India.

Schedel Garden hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.
