Legend has it that turkeys are – well…not so smart. Joanne Smith says that may not be true. She and her husband Kurt, who are the third-generation living on the Smith Farm at 4290 N. Opfer Lentz Rd., in Martin, witnessed a unique Easter Parade last Sunday morning. On Easter morning, the Smiths observed 15 wild turkeys parading across the back 40 acres of their farm. “They were in full plumage, with feathers in full array heading east toward our home,” Joanne said. “As we watched them approach, we realized they might not be as ignorant as turkeys have been described,” she quipped.
The Smiths joked that maybe the turkeys recognized it was Easter and not Thanksgiving as they freely marched across the former ham-producing hog farm heading east. “Once they crossed the road, they were startled by a passing vehicle and in unison began to gobble,” Joanne said. Kurt noted that he had never seen anything like the turkey parade in 60 years. “Mom and Dad live next door. They are mid `80's and have never witnessed anything like it either,” Joanne said.
