There was some big fun afoot at Lark Elementary as students got a leg up on their reading skills during Right to Read Week March 30 through April 3.

The event, themed “Read Your Socks Off,” included several special activities. Students were invited to make sock puppets and read to them each day for 10 to 15 minutes. Throughout the week, students showed off their reading skills to puppets made from crazy socks, mismatched socks, spirit colors (blue and gold) and favorite socks.

On Tuesday, guest reader Char Ebersole, the supervisor of the gifted program at Wood County Educational Service Center, visited the school and read a math/measurement story to all kindergarteners and first-graders. After the story, students used their feet to measure, like in the olden days of Kings.

Jana Laugerman’s first-grade Reading Club students read poems to preschool classes, kindergarten classes and on the announcements throughout the week.

On Friday the school’s first-ever kindergarten/first grade “sock hop” was held. Students danced to the Cha-Cha Slide, The Macarena, The Bunny Hop, and other songs. Music teacher Cheryl Dunlap helped coordinate the event and served as DJ.
