People who seed their life with frequent moments of positive emotions increase their resilience against challenges, according to a new study by a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill psychologist and colleagues.

The study, “Happiness Unpacked: Positive Emotions Increase Life Satisfaction by Building Resilience,” appeared in the June issue of the bimonthly journal Emotion.

Fit is key when choosing the right shoe for working out

In its latest tests of athletic shoes, the August issue of Consumer Reports rated the Asics GEL 150TR as the top-performing shoe for both men and women. Both models topped the charts for excellence in cushioning and fit and rated “Very Good” for stability.

Athletic shoes are designed for a range of activities such as aerobics, weight training, light running and court games. Consumer Reports enlisted a group of 12 panelists to test a total of 20 pairs –10 men’s and 10 women’s - for cushioning, stability, fit, flexibility, breathability and weight. Testing took place over three months and panelists tested the shoes in a variety of activities from jogging and aerobics to weight lifting and kickboxing.

Bicycling has many benefits including great exercise, getting to or maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing the risk of health problems.

“Bicycling has the ability to provide a great cardiovascular workout for children and adults without strain on joints such as the knees that can occur with jogging,” said Curt Gingrich, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., executive director, medical education at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.
