Race signups streamlined
Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio® has launched new registration sites for the Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio Race for the Cure® events in Toledo and Findlay in an effort to meet the growing breast cancer needs in Northwest Ohio.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure events are Saturday, Sept. 24 in Findlay and Sunday, Sept. 25 in Toledo. Register at www.komennwohio.org.

The new sites for the Toledo and Findlay races feature:
• Mobile responsive platforms

• Straightforward registration processes

• Simple multiple-person registrations

• Improved social media integration

• Quick access to donations for individuals and teams

For years, friends and supporters of Komen Northwest Ohio shared that the old platform was confusing and mobile registration for the Komen Northwest Ohio Race for the Cure events in Toledo and Findlay was too challenging, according to Michele Murnen Rice, president of the Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio board of directors.

After seeing one third of the grant applications go unfunded in 2016, the Komen Northwest Ohio Governing Board of Directors decided it was time for an upgrade. In May 2016, the board of directors voted to make the change to the new platform.

“Komen Northwest Ohio's goal is to fully fund the grants that save local lives through breast cancer assistance, research, and education,” Rice said. “Our primary sources of fundraising are the Race for the Cure events and we saw a connection between the struggle to register for the Race and the unfunded grants.”

Mary Westphal, executive director of Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio, believes the new sites will bring more people to the Races in Findlay and Toledo, which will result in more life-saving research and funding.

“The demand for breast cancer services in this community is larger than we can meet,” said Westphal. “Our primary goal is to help breast cancer patients and survivors live long and healthy lives. The more Komen friends we can attract to the Races, the more assistance we can provide to our 24-county service area.”

First Tee of Lake Erie
First Tee of Lake Erie, ProMedica and Inverness Club are collaborating to establish a youth development center in metro Toledo to provide young people with educational programs that build character, develop leadership skills and promote healthy choices.

The center will be located on Hill Avenue in Toledo next to the Metroparks of the Toledo Area Keil Farm property and adjacent to the Inverness Club.

“The First Tee of Lake Erie is excited to utilize a portion of the property to build a state-of-the-art golf facility, which will include a short golf course and practice facility,” said Adam Reny, executive director of The First Tee of Lake Erie. “This youth development center will give kids in the area a safe place to develop their social skills, improve academically, as well as work on their golf game. In addition, there will be possible employment opportunities through caddie training and other vocational skills development.”

The First Tee of Lake Erie currently offers programming in elementary schools, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo and at 10 facilities throughout Northwest Ohio. The youth development center will expand its ability to provide leadership skills training in the metro Toledo area.

“This is a great example of multiple parties coming together around youth development and the promotion of health and well-being in our communities.” said Randy Oostra, president and CEO of ProMedica.

In addition to The First Tee of Lake Erie and Inverness, ProMedica is working with the Metroparks of Toledo as well as The University Church to identify other opportunities to encourage the development of outdoor skills and active lifestyles, horticulture and urban farming on the Metroparks Keil Farm property next to the future Youth Development Center.

Also, there are other possibilities to connect with internationally recognized golfers who have interests in health-related causes, such as with the Ernie Els #GameON Autism Golf Program. The First Tee of Lake Erie is one of 12 locations in the country that will offer a 12-session golf program specially designed to teach individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder how to play the game of golf. The GameOn Autism program will begin in early July in partnership with the Great Lakes Collaborative for Autism.
