Red Cross welcomes 16-year-olds as blood donors
The local American Red Cross is launching a campaign to encourage 16-year-old high school students to start a lifelong habit of donating blood.

As of Oct. 6, in Ohio, 16-year-old residents are able to donate blood with written parental/guardian consent.

“Many of our committed donors began donating blood while they were in high school. As our donor base continues to age, it is important to educate a group of young donors about the importance of a safe and stable blood supply,” said Kathy Smith, director of donor services for the Western Lake Erie Region of the American Red Cross Blood Services.

If you are 16 years of age and would like to donate blood, log on to givebloodtoday.org to find out more information. Before donating, 16-year-olds must review a few materials and have a parent or guardian sign a written consent form, which must be brought to the blood drive or donor center.

Joyful Connections wrapping up Purple Light Nights campaign
Joyful Connections wishes to thank the citizens of Ottawa County for their support this fall with their first Purple Light Nights™ campaign.

County residents are urged to take a few minutes this October to affix a purple light to their residence in an effort to join together and strongly promote the message that “Domestic Violence has NO PLACE in our community!”

For the past few months, residents of Ottawa County have been encouraged to purchase a purple light bulb, available at Joyful Connections (8200 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor) or Family and Child Abuse Prevention Center (Sutton Center #900, Port Clinton), and display the lights on their porches or front windows through Oct. 31.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and purple is recognized as the symbolic color of domestic violence.

Residents who still have not had a chance to purchase the bulbs can still do so at the Apple Festival in Oak Harbor on Oct. 10 and 11. The cost of the bulbs is $3 or two for $5.

Proceeds will benefit Joyful Connections, which is a supervised visitation and exchange site for families in Ottawa County. Additional supplemental funding provided by the Ottawa County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

For more information about Purple Light Nights and how this movement got started, please visit the PLN Web site at: purplelightnights.org.
