Critical thinking workshop
Tamara Kagy, who teaches Critical Thinking at Terra State Community College, is offering a one-day workshop to help those interested in learning how (not why) we think the way you do, and how to break the chain that keeps you from living your personal best.

The workshop, “Breaking the Chain with Critical Thinking,” is being offered Saturday, Nov. 12 from 1-5 p.m. at the Sandusky Artisans Recovery Community Center located at 138 E Market St. in Sandusky. It is free to the public. Materials and snacks will be provided.

The workshop evolved from a class project she designed at Terra State in which students learn a step-by-step approach, applying the systematic structure of the critical thinking process to bring a positive influence into their lives. Her students have had notable results such as reducing stress, losing weight, becoming more socially confident, and meeting goals in their personal life and at work/school. Their new-found process helps them to see more creative solutions with empirical or factual support to problems that stand in the way of their personal best.

To register, email tkagy@terra.edu and put ‘C.T. Workshop’ in the email subject space. More info is available on the Facebook page of Sandusky Artisans.

Mental Health First Aid teaches a five-step plan for helping someone in a mental health crisis and connecting the person to appropriate help. First responders, law enforcement, teachers, students, and concerned citizens are welcome to take the course, which is taught by trained facilitators.

Just as one need not be a medical doctor to administer cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, a community member need not be a psychologist to recognize when someone is in emotional crisis and help him find professional care. The fee for the training is $12.

Cat adoption special
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet is offering a cat adoption special. Through November, the adoption fee for all cats and kittens is $10 (normally $75) for breast cancer survivors and families currently affected by the disease. Board President Lori Friedes says, “Our shelter manager was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and she’s already found a way to use her personal situation to inspire positive action by dreaming up this adoption special.

“This adoption special is also an opportunity to send more cats home in time for the holidays and make room for other cats in need,” she said. “We have so many wonderful cats of all ages and some with extra special stories. A couple who come to mind are Ollie who is pure white and deaf; Emma who is 7 years old and one of our longest shelter residents – she adores people and other cats.”

Potential adopters can stop by Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet at 5250 Hill Avenue (at Reynolds) Wednesday through Saturday from 12-5 p.m. The non-profit organization also has dogs available for adoption, but the $10 adoption price applies to cats and kittens only.
