Fifty-six million children across the country begin heading back to school this month, and AAA is urging motorists to slow down and stay alert in neighborhoods and school zones with its 75th annual School’s Open - Drive Carefully campaign.

The campaign hopes to curb a trend of unsafe driving behavior in school zones and neighborhoods that can result in children’s injury and sometimes death.

Currently the Red Cross is having a difficult time keeping blood on the shelves.

“The need for blood is ongoing. Despite our efforts to replenish our blood supply the Region is still in need of all blood types,” says Kathy Smith, director of Donor Services, for the American Red Cross.         

The region depends on volunteer blood donors to collect 300 pints of blood every day throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. In addition, approximately 20 percent of the blood collected in the region comes from high school and college blood drives. With not in session yet, these vital pints are typically not available.

Chiropractor James R. Brown says raising a 6-year-old son as a single parent has helped him in establishing his new practice in Oregon.

“I was awarded custody of my son during his first year of chiropractic school and balanced the demands of fatherhood and getting an education,” he said.

“I can relate to not always having time to make healthcare appointments,” he said. “And I know what it means to have limited funds.
