For the second consecutive year, Mercy St. Charles Hospital has been chosen to receive an Excellence in Patient Care award given by outcomes firm Studer Group®.

St. Charles will receive the award—which will be presented at the 9th annual What’s Right in Health Care conference—for its exemplary “cleanliness” ratings on a patient survey.

“We are very proud for St. Charles to be the recipient of this award for the second year in a row,” said Jeff Dempsey, Vice President of Operations at St. Charles. “Our number-one priority is our patients. With our staff paying attention to the details, like cleanliness, we are not only enhancing our patients’ overall experience, we are making it safer and more comfortable while they are at our facility.”

HCAHPS, or Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, is a national standardized survey tool used to measure adult inpatient perception of the quality of care they receive at a given acute care hospital.

The 27-question survey was created in 2002 by the combined efforts of The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Scores are publicly posted four times a year at www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov.

Studer Group gives its Excellence in Patient Care awards based on very high scores in each of the HCAHPS categories. Mercy St. Charles Hospital received its award in the “250-499 Beds” category for having the best responses to the HCAHPS question “During this hospital stay, how often were your room and bathroom kept clean?”

The What’s Right in Health Care® conference will take place October 19, 2011 in Chicago,

“Hospital cleanliness is a critical part of providing the best possible clinical outcomes,” said Quint Studer, founder and CEO of Studer Group. “Patients pay a lot of attention to it and have high expectations in this area. So to win this award a hospital’s leaders and staff must demonstrate extreme commitment and diligence. Everyone involved should feel a real sense of accomplishment and pride.”
