Racing for Recovery™ will hold its 10th annual 5K/10K Run/Walk Sunday, Oct. 23 on the campus of Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Boulevard, Sylvania.

The event will be held in memory of Eric J. Floyd who lost his life to an alcohol-related driving accident in 2008.

The day’s events will begin at 7 a.m. with check-in and registration, followed by a kids’ fun run at 8:30 a.m. (free for children 9 and under).

The feature 5K/10K Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m.. Athletes from across the country have taken part in this annual event, which includes male and female participants in all age divisions. Music, food and family fun will be a part of the day.

Dressing in a Halloween costume is encouraged.

Racing for Recovery’s mission is to prevent all forms of substance abuse by promoting a lifestyle of fitness and health for all those affected by addiction.

The non-profit 501(c)3 organization was founded by Todd Crandell, whose 13-year struggle with drugs and alcohol nearly destroyed his life and shattered his relationships with family and friends. Addiction also shattered the promise of a professional hockey career. He quit using alcohol and drugs on April 15, 1993 and has been sober ever since.

In the process of rebuilding his life, Crandall found he needed something more than traditional recovery programs. He chose the grueling challenge of the Ironman Triathlon – 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run. He ran his first triathlon in 1999 and has never stopped.

His book, “From Addict to Ironman,” co-written with John Hance, gives an unflinching account of his addiction and recovery .

Pre-registration for the event is $20 for individuals and for families, $18 for each additional family member. The fee includes a race shirt. Pre-registration is required by Oct. 21.

Race-day registration will be $30 for individuals and $28 for additional persons registering in a family.
