September is Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Awareness Month, which serves not only as a time to remember those lost to these diseases, but to celebrate the lives of a growing number of survivors.
In the U.S. alone, there are currently more than 950,000 people with some form of blood cancer – 53,000 of them will die within the year.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest, private organization concerned solely with finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and is instrumental in raising funds to help find cures, developing effective therapies, and offering support to blood cancer patients and their families.
In September and October, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will hold their annual Light The Night Walks all across the country to raise funds and hope for those affected by blood cancers.
The Light The Night Walk is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to individuals battling blood cancers. The Walk features participants walking a one-mile route and carrying colored balloons - white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold in memory of someone who has lost their battle with cancer.
Funds raised benefit life-saving research and patient services. Last year, individuals, families and corporations participating in walks raised more than $45 million.
The Toledo Light The Night Walk will be held Sunday, Oct. 2 at Fifth Third Field. For more information about participating in the Walk, forming a team, or sponsorship opportunities, visit www.lightthenight.org/noh or call 216-910-1244.
