Health, well-being classes offered
INPROCESS, a new store in the Woodville Mall, offers art made by local and regional artists, along with a variety of classes designed to improve health and well-being.

Current class offerings include:

Jazz – Sundays at 1 p.m.

Belly Dancing –Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.

Zumba –Thursdays at 7 p.m. or Fridays at 5:30 p.m.

Hula Hoop Fitness – Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m.

Basic, beginner and women’s only yoga classes are also offered several times per week.

To register stop in the store, which is located across from The Andersons.


Grand opening set
A grand opening will be held for Heartland of Oregon’s new post-acute rehabilitation unit and 2,900-foot therapy gym June 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. Heartland is located at 3953 Navarre Ave. in Oregon.

Tai Chi for health
Tai Chi for Health will be offered July 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the community room at Lutheran Home of Toledo, 131 N. Wheeling St., Toledo.

Classes will also be offered July 6 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Walbridge Senior Center, 705 N. Main St., Walbridge.

All adults are welcome to the beginning classes, which consist of slow movements that use gentle turns and stretching to improve balance, flexibility, circulation and strength.

Epilepsy Center benefit
Golf for Andy Inc. will hold its 6th Annual Golf Event July 23 at Bedford Hills Golf Club.

The four-person team golf scramble will begin with a 1 p.m. shotgun start and 100 percent of net proceeds will be distributed to help fund educational programs at the Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio and support two annual scholarships to Central Catholic High School students.

The event is in honor of Andy Bolbach, who passed away unexpectedly in his sleep 16 years ago at the age of 22. Andy lived with epilepsy the majority of his life, suffering from tonic-clonic seizures, but he never let that stop him from attempting to live a full life.

The cost to participate in the event is $75 per golfer, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls, lunch, dinner, draft beer and giveaways. For more information and to register, visit www.golfforandy.org.


Free screenings coming
ProMedica is offering free breast cancer screenings to uninsured and under-insured patients. at locations in northwest Ohio.

The screenings will include a clinical breast exam, screening mammogram, education, and follow-up support. ProMedica will provide these services in partnership with Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates, and Toledo Radiologic Associates.

The program is being funded through a grant from Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The grant will benefit 125 women and men who meet specific eligibility requirements.

Free screening events will be held at Bay Park Community Hospital, 2801 Bay Park Dr., Oregon, Oct. 19 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 419-690-8880 to make a reservation or for more information.

St. Luke’s Hospital also received the Komen grant and is currently offering free screenings, by appointment. For more information about eligibility requirements and to make an appointment, call St. Luke’s Hospital at 419-893-5988.

All participants will be asked to provide the name, telephone number and address of their family doctor as well as information about past mammograms.


Spielman to speak
Former NFL player Chris Spielman will be the keynote speaker for the Toledo Hospital Foundation’s second annual “The Classic,” a fundraiser for patient care services at the hospital’s Breast Care Center.

The fundraiser will be held July 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Country Club, 29601 Bates Rd., Perrysburg. Tickets start at $100 and are available by calling 419-291-3493.

Located at hospital’s Harris McIntosh Tower, the Breast Care Center is devoted exclusively to patients with breast health concerns and issues. In 2009, the center was named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology for meeting the highest standards of the radiology profession and achieving accreditation in mammography, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsy and stereotactic breast biopsy.

Spielman, a two-time All American, Ohio State Buckeye linebacker, played 11 seasons in the NFL, mostly with the Detroit Lions, and made the Pro Bowl six times. His wife, Stephanie, died from breast cancer in 2009.

For the last 13 years, Spielman has been a devoted advocate for women’s breast health and has helped raise millions of dollars to help fight breast cancer.


World Blood Donor Day
Strengthening the base of volunteer blood donors who help ensure a stable blood supply across the globe will be the focus of World Blood Donor Day June 14.

With the 2011 theme “more blood, more life,” organizers of World Blood Donor Day are working to boost the number of people on every continent who give blood on a regular basis.

“Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood,” said Annie Marckel, program manager, communications for the Western Lake Erie Region of the American Red Cross. “World Blood Donor Day provides the chance for all of us to recognize that blood is essential to health care across the globe.”

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. ID is required.


Caregiving web conference
The non-profit National Private Duty Association (NPDA), along with the Ohio Chapter, has announced that it will host a consumer education web conference entitled Creating a Senior Friendly Home to Help Parents Age in Place June 16 at 8 p.m.

The live and interactive program, which is being held during National Home Safety Month, will provide advice on how to design and furnish a home to create a safe environment for a senior aging at home. The event is free of charge to participants.

The web conference topics include designing a home for senior safety and comfort, addressing changing health needs, appropriate furnishings and ambient technology.
