Relay Night at Rayz to benefit American Cancer Society “Relay Night at Rayz” will be held May 14 from 5 to 11 p.m. at Rayz Café, 608 Main St., Genoa.
Throughout the evening, a percentage of the sales will go to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event, which is sponsored by Rayz and the Tiki Warriors Relay for Life team, will include specials until 9 p.m.; “purple” shots, 50/50 raffles and “Save the Tatas” shirts for sale.
The Relay for Life of Ottawa County will run from June 3 at 6 p.m. to June 4 at noon at Oak Harbor High School. The public is welcome.
Call for volunteers The Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio will present the 23rd Annual Practically a Golf Tournament (PGT) May 20 at Levis Commons in Perrysburg.
The unique 18-hole, miniature golf tournament has grown into the Epilepsy Center’s most famous event, raising more than $600,000 over the past 22 years.
All funds raised will be used to support Epilepsy Center programs, which include a peer support group, family camp, a resource center, a family support network, emergency medication assistance and information on living with epilepsy, along with The Kids on The Block puppet show to schools. All services are offered at no charge. The center also provides respite care, adult day services, non-medical transportation service and job coaching.

Red Cross training The American Red Cross now offers two-year certification for CPR. The following classes are being offered in May:

Adult CPR –May 16, 6-10 p.m.
Infant/Child CPR –May 17, 6-9:30 p.m.
First Aid Basics –May 18, 6-8:30 p.m.
Participants will learn how to clear obstructed airways of conscious and unconscious victims, how to perform rescue breathing and how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They will also get information on identifying and treating sudden illnesses, including treatment for shock and bleeding, burns, eye and nose injuries, bites and stings, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, poisoning, diabetic emergencies, stroke, seizures, temperature extremes, and rescues.

Free to Breathe run/walk Area residents are invited to join in the fight against lung cancer by participating in the Third Annual Free to Breathe® Rumble Run and One Mile Walk, which will be held June 11 at Perrysburg Junior High School, 550 East South Boundary St., Perrysburg.
Registration will begin at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5K at 9 a.m. and the one-mile walk at 9:05.
Online registration, which can be completed at FreeToBreathe.org, is $25 for adults and $5 for children through June 8. Mail-in registration, which closes June 6, is $28 for adults and $8 for children. Event-day registration is $30 for adults and $10 for children.
Proceeds raised from the 5K Rumble Run/One-Mile Walk and half-mile Kids’ Fun Run will help support the National Lung Cancer Partnership’s vital research, education and awareness programs.

Eye assessments offered One in 10 infants is at risk from undiagnosed eye and vision problems, which, if undetected, can lead to permanent vision impairments, developmental delays and in rare cases, life-threatening health risks. However, only 14 percent of children from infancy to age six have had a comprehensive eye assessment from an eye care professional.
During InfantSEE® Week, May 16 to 20, more than 200 Ohio-based doctors of optometry will be donating their time to provide no-cost comprehensive eye and vision assessments for babies between six and 12 months of age.
Locally, no-cost eye assessments will be provided May 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Imagination Station, One Discovery Way in downtown Toledo. Walk-ins will be accepted.

Contest announced Unison Behavioral Health Group has launched a special contest as part of its Spring 2011 “Live to Celebrate Another Day” prevention campaign, funded by the Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Lucas County.
Lucas County teens can visit the Unison website and download the “Live to Celebrate Another Day” sober contract and contest entry forms. Each teen who submits a signed sober contract and entry form will be entered for a chance to win an iPad 2, valued at $499.
“While the response to our sober contract initiative has been overwhelmingly positive from teens and their parents, we wanted to provide something special as an extra incentive,” said Dr. Larry Hamme, chief clinical officer for Unison. “Teens today are all about the latest technology and the Apple iPad 2 is something students are using for both entertainment and study.”

Lead-testing clinic The Sandusky County Health Department will hold a free lead-testing clinic for children 6 months through 6 years old May 16 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Lead poisoning is the most common and preventable environmental disease that affects America’s children. It affects one out of six preschool-age children and can result in developmental and growth delays and learning and behavior problems. As a community considered at high risk for lead poisoning, it is important that children be tested.
Expo to benefit MDA A “Spring has Sprung” Craft/Vendor Expo to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association will be held May 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 3154 Navarre Ave.
The event will feature 13 vendors, plus a chance to win prizes.
Program addresses Legal guardianship Relatives, friends, and caretakers of those with chronic mental illness will want to mark Monday, May 16 on their calendars.
That evening the Honorable David Woessner will address, “Legal Guardianship in Wood County” at an educational program sponsored by National Alliance on Mental Illness of Wood County.
The program will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Simpson Building, 1291 Conneaut Rd., Bowling Green. There is no fee to attend this information event, nor is registration necessary.
During his presentation, Judge Woessner, of the Wood County Court of Common Pleas, Probate and Juvenile Divisions, will describe how to become a legal guardian through the Wood County Probate Court. He will also discuss a volunteer guardian program now being developed in the county that will train interested citizens to become legal guardians for mentally ill persons who have no family members to assume this role.
As past-president of the Wood County Bar Association and the Wood County Law Library Association and Administrative Judge for the Juvenile Residential Center of Northwest Ohio, Judge Woessner has worked with legal guardians for citizens of all ages.
