Posters created by local students have been nationally recognized by AAA for earning first, second, honorable mention and Grand Awards in the 66th Annual Traffic Safety Poster Contest.

These students’ posters, along with 12 others were selected by AAA Northwest Ohio from among nearly 400 local entries to represent northwest Ohio at the national level. A panel of traffic safety experts then judged the national finalists based on originality, technique, visual impact and relationship of messaging to traffic safety. The following students’ entries were selected as winners from among the hundreds of submissions nationwide:

1st Place/Grand Award Winners (earning $1,300 each):
• Andrea Harmeyer – 8th Grade, Genoa Middle School
• Kacie Young – 5th Grade, Glendale-Feilbach

2nd Place (earning $200)
•Conner LaGrange – 1st Grade, Brunner Elementary

Honorable Mention
• Devin D’Emilio – 1st Grade, Brunner Elementary
• Gabi Fleming – 10th, Toledo Christian School
• Kelsey Hufford – 8th Grade, Genoa Middle School
• Tawfiq Abou-Dahech – 5th Grade, Glendale-Feilbach
• Nora Ladd – 1st Grade, Put-in-Bay
• Emma Bergman – 5th Grade, Saint Boniface Catholic
• Alexandria Biederstedt – 6th Grade, Napoleon Middle School
• Mana Maxted – 10th Grade, Wauseon High School

“These students’ posters not only showcased their artistic talents, but also helped spread an important message about traffic safety,” said April Cochran, AAA Northwest Ohio’s Marketing Operations Manager. “Motor vehicle-related crashes continue to be the number one cause of death for children over age 2, and we hope entries such as theirs will help students’ share the importance of traffic safety with their peers.”

Artwork and videos receiving national recognition from AAA are featured on the motor club’s official Traffic Safety photostream on Flickr.com (Flickr.com/AAAsafety), YouTube.com channel (YouTube.com/AAA) and Facebook page (Facebook.com/AAAfanpage).

This year marks the 66th anniversary of the program, which aims to reduce traffic-related fatalities through education and community outreach. Each year, students design posters and public service announcements using traffic safety slogans selected by AAA. Entrants are grouped according to grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. During national judging, first-, second- and third-place honors are awarded in four U.S. geographic regions for each age division. One national Grand Award is then selected in the primary, elementary, junior high and senior high divisions from among the top regional submissions.
