Healthpoint Center offering nurse aid training
Those interested in finding jobs in the medical field have a new location to get their training with the opening of Healthpoint Nurse Aide Training Center, located on the corner of Locust and Main streets in Oak Harbor.

Up to 24 students can be accommodated per class. Owners Deb Wilt, of Bascom, and Katrina Millinger, of Oak Harbor, both registered nurses, provide individualized hands-on instruction for the three week classes.

Wilt and Millinger have worked in long-term care in the training business for several years and have been approved by the OhioDepartment of Health.

The program requires 88 hours of instruction. Call 419-898-2024.

Free health screenings

 The Zenobia Shrine, in conjunction with St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, is sponsoring a free health screening clinic April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Pediatric Emergency Center at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, 2213 Cherry St.

The purpose of the clinic is to evaluate children from infancy through age 18 with burn problems, orthopedic disorders or spinal cord injuries or damage for treatment eligibility at a Shrine Hospital in Erie, Pa., Cincinnati, Ohio or Chicago. Treatment is provided at no cost. In addition, the Zenobia Shrine provides free transportation for patients and their families to the Shrine hospitals.

A physician will be present to evaluate the patient’s condition for treatment qualifications. Evaluations will take approximately one half hour.

Psychic health fair

A Psychic/Health Fair and Bake Sale will be held April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Good Will Spiritualist Church, 300 E. Breckman, Walbridge. Call 419-833-5503 for more information.

In addition, meditation classes will be offered at the church April 15, 22 and 29 from 7 to 8 p.m. A free-will offering will be accepted for the classes.
Senior fair set
A Senior Fair will is being planned for April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the community room at Lutheran Home of Toledo, 131 N. Wheeling St., Toledo.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will include information about a variety of topics including pharmacy services, veterans’ benefits, health and fitness, home health care senior housing and more.

Volunteers to be honored

More than 125 volunteers at Bay Park Community Hospital (BPCH) will be honored for the 21,460 hours they provided to thousands of area patients and families throughout 2008.

In celebration of National Volunteer Month, BPCH will honor their volunteers during a gala event April 22 at noon at Maumee Bay State Park, 1400 State Park Rd., Oregon.

In addition, the top 20 hours awards, and for the eighth consecutive year, the Volunteer Hero Awards will be presented at the event. The Volunteer Hero Awards are presented to those who consistently provided outstanding, courteous and kind service to patients, visitors, physicians and staff.

The volunteer services department at BPCH supports the mission and values of the hospital by maintaining an outstanding volunteer staff whose services augment those of the paid staff. They come from various ages and wide range of careers.

Volunteers can be found within numerous areas of the hospital, such the Beacon Gift Shop, outpatient surgery, information desk, materials management, human resources, emergency center, central sterile services and various other department-based positions.

Prostate support group to meet

Memorial Health Care System’s Man to Man Prostate Cancer Support Group helps men cope with prostate cancer by providing community-based education and support to patients and their family members.

Prostate cancer survivors, those dealing with the disease now and their spouses and significant others are invited to join a support group meeting April 29 at 7 p.m. in Meeting Room A of Memorial Hospital in Fremont.

Worldwide celebration
On April 25 at 10 a.m., Tai Chi players from throughout the Toledo area will gather at Wildwood Metropark (near the Visitor’s Center) to celebrate Toledo’s 4th annual World Tai Chi/QiGong Day.

The gathering, celebrated worldwide in 50 countries on six continents at 10 a.m. (in respective time zones), is for the promotion of global health education.
