A benefit is being planned for the Alan Murphy family Feb. 21 from 3 p.m. to midnight at the Millbury Fireman’s Hall.
Murphy, of Walbridge, is a Lake Township fire firefighter and is employed as a critical care transport assistant with Life Flight. Alan and his wife Kathy have three daughters, two of whom recently had to have major surgeries – one a rare heart surgery.
The Murphys have also endured other trials, including a job loss and the death of Alan’s mother on Christmas Eve. “Through all of this, he maintains a positive attitude and strong religious faith,” said Sarah Velliquette, marketing services coordinator with Mercy Health Partners. “During the roughest times, Alan would use his time to help others in the community who were in need, whether it was fixing a roof or a furnace.”
Proceeds raised from the benefit will help the family defray medical expenses.
The benefit will include a chicken dinner and live and silent auctions. Other food items will also be available. There will also be live entertainment after the auctions. Adult beverages will be available after 6 p.m.
Auction items will be accepted at Fire Station 1 in Walbridge Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The requested donation for tickets is $10 per person.
The event is being sponsored by a coalition of public service, community and business organizations with which the family has been involved.
Those who cannot attend may make donations at the State Bank, 311 N. Main St., Walbridge. Checks may be made payable to Walbridge-Lake Firefighter’s Association. “Murphy family benefit” should be noted in the memo section of the check.
