Cheering Chad’s Challenge benefit planned to help Curtice man
A spaghetti dinner benefit to help a Curtice man fighting Mitochondrial disease will be held Dec. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St., Genoa.
Chad Sparks is a 38-year-old husband and father of four, as well as a grandfather to 16-month-old Anna. In November 2011, Sparks was diagnosed with MELAS Mitochondrial Disease, a potentially terminal illness. His brother had been diagnosed with the disease a few years earlier. Mitochondrial disease can lead to swallowing difficulties, severe gastrointestinal problems and susceptibility to seizures and strokes. Other complications may include blindness, deafness, muscle failure, heart, kidney and liver disease. Sparks has already experienced weight loss, muscle failure, extreme fatigue, type II diabetes, reduced vision and hearing, and reduced tolerance to heat and cold.
Unable to work, Sparks is applying for disability, however his medical bills and related costs are mounting. All funds raised from the benefit will assist him with his ongoing expenses.
The benefit will include a spaghetti dinner, music, a 50/50 raffle and silent auction. Dinner will include spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, roll with butter and a drink plus dessert. Tickets are $10 if pre-paid by Dec. 21 or $15 at the door. Admission is $5 for children 10 and under.

“Team Rachel” benefit
A spaghetti dinner to benefit Rachel Volschow, a Genoa-area woman who is battling cancer, will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 from 4 to 10 p.m. at St. Johns UCC, 1213 Washington St., Genoa.
In 2009, at the age of 34, Volschow was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. Her treatment included intense chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, and radiation. In December 2010, she learned the cancer had spread to her spine. In July 2011, the cancer spread to her brain, requiring radiation followed by chemotherapy.
Volschow is currently participating in a study, which requires her to travel to Indiana University.

Strength training app
More than 30 million kids and teens play sports in the United States. According to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 3.5 million sports-related injuries to children under age 15 are treated each year, with injuries from football, basketball, baseball and soccer topping the list.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends strength training for kids ages 8 and older as a safe and effective means of both injury reduction and performance enhancement.
To give families the tools they need to strength train safely and effectively, the AAP has released the IronKids app, which includes everything a young athlete needs to safely build strength, balance and fitness, and to prepare to excel in sports and keep playing by preventing injury.
The app features a 45-minute workout led by Jordan D. Metzl, MD, FAAP, a nationally recognized sports medicine pediatrician. It includes detailed demonstrations to work the core, upper body and lower body, as well as strength-training pointers and tools to create custom workouts and set goals and reminders. It is available through the iTunes store for iPhone/iPad/iTouch.
“Parents think that strength training is dangerous for kids, that it stunts growth and requires the help of a professional trainer – but these assumptions are untrue,” said Dr. Metzl, who practices sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. “Strength training is different from power lifting, and it is safe for kids starting at 8 years old. Because of these misconceptions and the lack of resources available for strength training, most kids just don’t do it. That is part of the reason we’re seeing so many injuries in youth sports – kids’ bodies aren’t prepared.”
Dr. Metzl adds, “We developed a home strength training program that kids and parents can conveniently do together, and that coaches can use on the field or in the gym. We also are encouraging physicians nationwide to discuss the benefits of strength training with their patients.”
