The Friends of the Harris-Elmore Fire Department, along with the Harris-Elmore Fire and EMS Association are planning a benefit to help one of their own who is facing the biggest challenge of his life.
Fire Chief Mike Murray, a lifelong resident of Elmore who has served his community for over 35 years on both the fire department and EMS, is battling an advanced form of aggressive prostate cancer.
Murray recently underwent surgery and faces ongoing treatment “Though he has insurance, the family faces mounting uncovered medical expenses,” said Clarence Wilburn, who is helping to organize the event. “Mike has already used his vacation time and he’s not currently able to work.
“We’re hoping for a big turnout at the fundraiser so we can help Mike and his wife Diane during this difficult time,” Wilburn said.
The benefit will be held at the Harris-Elmore Fire Station, 321 Rice St., on Saturday, Oct. 13 starting at 1 p.m. The benefit will include a steak or chicken dinner, served from 4 to 7:30 p.m., a live and silent auction and raffles, with proceeds going to help Murray cover his mounting medical bills.
The fundraiser will also include a Motorcycle Run, which will head out at 10 a.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Call 419-466-4412 for more information.
Tickets for the dinner are available for $10 and are available for advance purchase by calling 419-466-4412. A limited number of dinner tickets will be sold at the door.
Anyone wishing to donate new or gently-used merchandise that can be used for either the live or silent auction may call 419-855-6207 or 419-466-4785. Arrangements may be made for donated items to be picked up.
Among the items that will be up for bid at the live auction are an 8 x 10 storage shed, a set of golf clubs, LED and plasma TVs, jewelry, store gift certificates, assorted gift baskets, vacation accommodations in Florida, Myrtle Beach and the Outer Banks, autographed items from sports figures and singers such as Alan Jackson, Martina McBride and others, jewelry and more.
Monetary donations may be sent to the Harris-Elmore Firefighter Association, P.O. Box 252, Elmore, Ohio 43416. Checks should be made payable to the Harris-Elmore Firefighters Association, with a notation as a donation to the Chief Murray Cancer Fundraiser. Donations are also being accepted for the Chief Michael Murray Fund at area Genoa Bank locations
