Poggemeyer Design Group is looking at an alternative alignment of a new bike path that may ease concerns of nearby property owners worried that it is too close to their homes.
The bike path is part of the Stadium Road Bikeway Phase 2 project, which will connect the existing Municipal Complex Connector, currently ending on Corduroy Road on the Clay High School frontage, to the existing Stadium Road Bikeway that currently ends just north of Eagles Landing Drive. The bikeway will be a 10-foot wide asphalt multi-use path with two foot wide treated shoulders and will be 8,100-feet long.
Charles Carson, of Corduroy Road, told council at a recent meeting that he is opposed to any alignment of the bike path on the south side of Corduroy because it would be too close to his house. He would prefer to see the path go on the north side of the road because there was more open field.
Public Service Director Paul Roman said he was aware of Carson’s concerns about the bike path on Corduroy.
“I’ve always known that you definitely prefer a bike path not to be on your side of the road,” Roman said to Carson. “We hired Poggemeyer Design Group to lay out every alternative that is feasible.”
Roman said the city sent a letter to inform residents about survey work in the area. He wants to look at options for the bike path on the north side, south side and lanes on both sides at the edge of the road.
“We can put bike lanes in that are similar to Starr Avenue,” said Roman. Starr has bike lanes on both sides and appear to be just an extension of the road.
“I think the bike lane concept is really just a matter of widening the road maybe three to four feet because Corduroy is already somewhat wide on its own,” said Roman. “Both sides would kind of share a bike lane, but it would be physically connected to the road, so therefore it’s not so close to the homes there. But that’s just one alternative. I’d like to look at it all on the north side as well. We’ve talked to those property owners too. Right now, it’s open. Poggemeyer is supposed to put together a preliminary design and submit it to the city.”
The bike path as it goes by the municipal complex and Clay High School comes out by the drive at the soccer fields, according to Roman.
“So the question is, how do you get from that drive to Stadium Road?” asked Roman. “Right now, the path is planned to be on the west side of Stadium from Corduroy to Eagles Landing Plat 4. The only unknown is the section where Mr. Carson lives. So Poggemeyer is looking really at those three alternatives: north, south, or bike lanes on both sides. Personally, I like the bike lanes. Having it on the north side would be difficult to get around with a 10 foot path all on one side.”
Seferian said if they decided to go with a bike lane on each side of the road, it would have minimal impact on Mr. Carson’s property.
The city will make a decision after reviewing Poggemeyer’s preliminary design, said Roman.
The city earlier this year hired Poggemeyer Design Group for $39,640 to provide professional engineering services for the final design and bidding for the project.
Poggemeyer conducted the final design for Stadium Road Bikeway Phase 1, a 10-foot wide asphalt multi-use path extending from South Shore Park to Eagles Landing Drive that was constructed in 2002; the Municipal Complex Connector Bikeway project Phase I, a 10-foot wide, off road path along Wolf Creek and Starr Extension that was constructed in 2003; the Municipal Complex Connector Bikeway project Phase 2, which connects the city municipal complex to Clay High School that was completed in 2008; and the Pearson Park Connector Bikeway project, constructed in 2010.
The Stadium Road Bikeway Phase 2 is the last leg of the main bikeway path that would go from Pearson Park to Maumee Bay State Park.
The estimated construction cost of the project is $525,000.
The city has received a $440,000 Transportation Enhancement Grant from the Federal Highway Administration to construct the project next year.
