Area motorists will have a chance to test their driving skills while distracted Friday April 6 at the Oregon Municipal Complex.
The Ohio Department of Transportation’s Distracted Driver Simulator will be at the complex from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The simulator challenges participants to navigate streets and highways while talking on a cell phone, texting, and listening to passenger conversations.
The simulator is a component of the transportation department’s road safety campaign Every Move You Make, Keep It Safe, which is part of the state’s goal of reducing road fatalities by 5 percent over the next three years.
In 2010, Ohio law enforcement agencies reported 39 fatalities, 454 serious injuries, and 12,140 crashes that could be attributed to distracted driving.
Robert Momany, vice president of programs and services of the Safety Council of Northwest Ohio, said the council and SSOE are sponsoring the simulator to raise awareness of the danger of using cell phones and texting while driving.
He said appointments are not needed.
