Kelly J. Kaczala, news editor at The Press Newspapers, and Melissa A. Burden, freelance reporter, last week won an Excellence in Journalism award from The Press Club of Toledo in the nondaily category for a story about a Northwood man who had stopped breathing on March 3 waiting 28 minutes for a rescue squad to arrive, despite three calls made by his wife to 9-1-1. He later died at a hospital after suffering brain damage from a lack of oxygen.
Judges called their reporting “the very essence of journalism.”
The award was presented at the 13th annual Touchstone Awards that honored community service and excellence in journalism on Oct. 6 at the Toledo Club.
