Back in 2009 the Genoa football team decided that they wanted to show support for victims and survivors of breast cancer and draw attention to this disease during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
They did this by wearing pink gloves, armbands and athletic tape on their wrists and ankles. The team will continue this tradition Oct. 28 in their game against Eastwood at Comet Stadium.
This year, participation will be dramatically increased as the game will be part of the “Spielman Gridiron Classic,” with a tailgate party before the game featuring Johnny Rodriguez.

The Genoa stadium will be a literal “Pink Out” with the athletes’ parents wearing pink jerseys sporting their athlete’s number, the cheerleaders wearing pink sweatshirts and the marching band wearing pink gloves.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink or purchase Spielman Gridiron Classic pink t-shirts, bracelets, rally towels or other items available at the stadium. Money raised from the sale of these items will be donated to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
The event is being planned with the theme, “Together, We Will Win” in the fight to conquer breast cancer.
The October 28 Genoa-Eastwood game will likely be the most important league game each of these teams will play this year as it should be for the Northern Buckeye Conference championship. Despite the importance of this game, the rivals will wear pink to stand together to draw attention to the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness.
Oak Harbor and Clyde did the same thing last Friday night — asking fans to wear pink to the game. The pink Breast Cancer Awareness bows were painted on the field and Oak Harbor football players and cheerleaders wore pink towels during the game.
Tailgating for the Genoa-Eastwood game starts at 5 p.m. with live entertainment. The game is at 7 p.m.
