The first step in an attempt to have a lower speed limit imposed at the intersection of Millbury and Walbridge roads in Lake Township or to have the corner become a four-way stop has begun with the township trustees directing the police chief to compile a list of accidents at the corner in the past five years.
The trustees Tuesday directed Chief Mark Hummer to compile the list, which will be included with a letter to the Wood County engineer’s office asking for a traffic survey of the roads near the corner, said Ron Sims, a trustee.
Sims said he has been contacted by residents living near the intersection who are asking for a lower speed limit, or to have stop signs also posted on Walbridge Road, or both. Currently, stop signs are posted on Millbury Road at the intersection, but not on Walbridge.
The speed limit on Millbury Road near the intersection is 45 mph. There are no speed limit signs posted on that stretch of Walbridge. Richard Welling, a township trustee, said state law sets the limit at 55 mph on roads in unincorporated areas where limits aren’t otherwise designated.
Chief Hummer said there was a fatal accident at the intersection last year and a non-fatal accident recently.
In other business, Vicki Schwamberger, fiscal officer, requested the trustees fill a vacant part-time position in her office.
“I think I have identified a need,” she told the trustees, adding the position would be paid from the general fund.
“Several items of business” have gone undone since January of 2009, she said, and boxes remain unpacked since the fiscal officer’s office was moved, along with the trustees and other departments, to a temporary trailer after the June 2010 tornado destroyed the township administration building.
The trustees, police department, EMS personnel, zoning inspector, and Schwamberger moved into the new administration building in May.
Melanie Bowen, who chairs the board of trustees, said the board had discussed hiring someone before it became immersed in efforts to recover from the tornado.
The township’s Sept. 11 concert and annual tree dedication will be held at Friendship Park at 6:15 p.m.
