Rules developed by the Ohio Livestock Standards Board will go into effect Sept. 29, according to James Zehringer, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
The department has developed printable guidelines to assist farmers with the new standards and a series of information sessions, to be hosted by Dr. David Glauer, former state veterinarian, has been scheduled around the state.
The meetings are open to the public and ODA staff members will be available for questions.
“The members of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board and representatives from Ohio’s agricultural community devoted the past 18 months to developing and vetting the most comprehensive livestock care standards in the nation,”Zehringer said.
Voters approved a ballot initiative in 2009 to establish the standards board.
The next public meetings will be Aug. 31 in Wooster at the Ohio State University agricultural research center, 1680 Madison Ave.; Sept. 14 in Lima at Independence Elementary School, 615 Tremont Ave.; Sept. 27 in Zainesville at the Ohio University branch campus, 1425 Newark Road, and Sept. 29 in Fort Recovery at the American Legion Hall, 2490 State Route 49 N.
All meetings are from 6-8 p.m.
