The Press newspaper staff and photographer won first and second place in The Press Club of Cleveland’s 2011 Excellence in Journalism awards.
The Press news staff, which includes news editors Kelly J. Kaczala and Larry Limpf, assistant editor Tammy Walro, sports editor Pat Eaken, and writer Melissa Burden, won first place in the breaking news category for coverage of a killer tornado that swept through Millbury and Lake Township on June 5, 2010.
Photographer Ken Grosjean won first place for a series of photos taken in the aftermath of the tornado. Grosjean also won second place for a photo he took of a man who was protesting the foreclosure of his home.
The Press won second place for best non-daily newspaper in Ohio for its coverage of the tornado on June 5. “Extensive coverage of a tornado’s wrath with many sidebars and over several issues demonstrates this newspaper’s service to its readers…The Press is diligent in covering community news,” according to the judge’s comments.
