The Genoa’s Farmer’s Market, which began its third season in May, has reduced the number of days the market will be open. Last year there were 27 market days, according to Cindy Nolte, market coordinator, and this year there will be a total of 13.

The market will run from May through October, but it will only be held every other week.

The change, she said, is due to a lack of support from the community and requests from the venders.

“We are looking for more community involvement if anybody would like to help,” said Nolte.

Although there are some “loyal local customers that come every week and look forward to it,” Nolte said the community is “not all that supportive. I’m having a hard time getting people excited about it. I think it’s one of those things that take awhile to get going.”

Despite this, Nolte said there was a pretty good turnout for the Americana Berry Fest and Flag Disposal Day on June 13. The public was invited to bring their tattered flags and the American Legion carried out a flag burning ceremony.

Typical market items include, eggs, meat, crafts, candles, soaps, herbs, plants and produce in accordance with the growing season. On average, there are usually between eight and 10 venders at the market. In particular, Nolte said she appreciates the support of Lisa Johnson Cowell and Tina Davies, both full season venders.

“It gives the community a place to look for locally-grown things and assurance they’re free of foreign influence,” said Cowell. “You don’t know how things are grown in foreign countries or out of state. [With] local people you’re pretty sure that they’re fresh, that they don’t have preservatives and they’re picked when their ripe, not weeks before.”

On June 27, the market was sponsored by local resident Linda Ornellas, who held a Great American Bake Sale as part of a national campaign sponsored by The Food Network and Family Circle magazine. All of the proceeds for the bake sale will help feed local children in need.

Began as a one-time event
The farmer’s market was started in August 2007. It was originally suggested to be a one-time event in conjunction with the street fair but it became a regular event. The market is held in the Town Hall parking lot which, according to Nolte, was the site for the original farmer’s exchange.

In the future, Nolte hopes to get the support of the Future Farmers of America.

The special events planned for this season include: Safety Day (July 11), an Art Contest (August 1), Dog Daze (August 29), Salsa Fest (September 12 and 19) and the Antique Tractor Show and Scarecrow Contest (October 10).

Mayor Mark Williams, chaired village council’s economic development committee and organized the farmer’s market committee.

He told a Press reporter in 2007 the idea for a market came to him while driving through the area.

“This was something that no other village was doing. It’s a chance for local residents to either come and buy or sell their fresh produce without having to drive out of the village,” he said at the time. “We will just see how it goes this year. Hopefully even if it starts out small it will grow and there will be more and different items from week to week.”
