Bus garage renovations on Eastwood agenda
The second phase of plans to renovate the Pemberville bus garage into two classrooms will be on the agenda of the Eastwood school board for its Nov. 28 meeting.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. in the high school study hall.
Superintendent Brent Welker said the preliminary estimates for the project have been more than $250,000 – a figure he considers too high.
He said the administration and board will look for ways to bring the costs closer to $225,000
Poggemeyer Design Group is assisting the district with the project.
Welker describes the building as “structurally very sound” and said the renovations will enable it to serve the district for “many years.”
Still, some residents of the district have questioned the decision to renovate the bus garage instead of re-opening Webster Elementary School.
Welker said costs for moving back into Webster would be much higher because the kitchen would have to be opened again, a principal and secretary would have to hired, as would a custodial staff.
“In one year the overhead would dwarf what we are spending to renovate the bus garage,”
He said garage renovations are a “one-time cost” while re-opening the Webster building would require yearly costs and overhead.
The board will convene at 2 p.m. for its regular meeting
The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the high school library.
