Help available to help older Ohioans file their taxes

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Department of Aging and AARP Ohio have teamed to raise awareness of assistance available to help older Ohioans file their income tax returns.

The AARP Tax-Aide program has 1,400-plus volunteers at more than 400 sites throughout the state - including libraries, community centers, senior housing complexes and senior centers - ready to assist moderate- to low-income Ohioans in preparing their federal, state and local tax returns.

For Rachel Hartzell, it turned out to be more than just a school project.

Last weekend, her hours of planning and organizing came to fruition as members of the community turned out at a spaghetti dinner benefit organized by the Clay High School senior to help an Oregon family meet mounting medical expenses for their young twins.

It all started with a child’s single act of kindness and selflessness, and now a local girl’s compassion for those who are less fortunate is bringing national spotlight to the Toledo area.

Hannah’s Socks, a Perrysburg-based nonprofit focused on providing clothing necessities to the less fortunate, was featured in the Feb. 9 issue of PEOPLE magazine.
