One of Genoa freshman Jessie Neff’s best friends is 6 years old and weighs about

1,000 pounds, and his name is Toby.

Jessie and Toby have come to be very close over the past few years. You could say that Neff, a first-year member of Genoa’s equestrian team, has fallen hard for Toby.

“He’s an Appaloosa quarter horse,” Neff said. “We borrowed him and I’ve been riding him since he was three. I’ve been showing him and riding him and we’ve learned a lot together. He has a good personality. He’s goofy and you can tell he knows when he’s being judged in the show ring. He goes into this zone where it’s like all business. He knows what he’s supposed to be doing.”

It’s a Halloween tradition - the fifth annual Tombstone Derby will be rolling through Elmore Saturday Oct. 24.

This year, the Elmore Area Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the event, has added a “Pet Costume Contest” to the calendar of events. Bring your favorite pet dressed especially for Halloween. A “People’s Choice” and “Scariest Costume” award will be given to the winning contestants. There is no cost to enter the contest.

The “Parade of Fools,” which has been a stalwart of the Tombstone Derby since its inception, will have a few more “goulash” twists added to it. This year, kids’ battery-operated cars, pets and anyone else who wishes to participate will join the featured motorized caskets racers as they parade through the village.

Organizers ask that parade-goers bring noisemakers to ward off any scary creatures along the parade route. For the first time, crafters will be on hand to show and sell their wares as part of this year’s festivities.

It’s no trick – families are in for a treat this Halloween season at the Toledo Museum of Art.

The museum is offering classes, workshops, hands-on activities and other programs for the whole family.

On Saturday, Oct. 31, there will be Halloween fun throughout the Museum from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the galleries become an enchanted land of fortunetellers, princesses and other characters.

Costumed staff will re-create works of art as visitors follow a map to find special places in the museum. Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite storybook hero or heroine, but are asked to leave props like toy swords, wands and other objects at home. There will be treats as you leave the museum.

Activities galore are planned leading up to the holiday, with everything from workshops on making glass ghosts to mystery tours. They include:
