The year was 1910.

William Taft was President of the United States and the Boy Scouts were founded.

Centenarians Al and Betty Rose took a limo
ride down “Memory Lane,” including stops in
Oregon, in celebration of their recent 79th
wedding anniversary.

It was also the year Al Rose and Elizabeth (Betty) Dye were born.

Al and Betty have witnessed a great deal of history in their 100 years on earth. But they have also accomplished something very few people have been able to do. Al and Betty have each lived to be 100 years old, and they have been married for 79 years – since 1931.

The Roses are residents of The Elizabeth Scott Community, an assisted living and long-term care facility in Maumee. On Monday, June 7, the facility celebrated the Roses’ anniversary with a limousine ride down memory lane.

“We’ve researched this online and, from what we could find, there are only two cases in the United States where the married couple were both at least 100-years-old,” said Matt Bucher, director of Marketing for The Elizabeth Scott Community. “The odds of this happening are astronomically low. Since this is a special anniversary for the Roses, we wanted to do something for them to commemorate their many years together.”

Twiggy debuts in zoo’s new elephant facility

There’s a new girl in town and she’s hanging out at the Toledo Zoo.

Twiggy the elephant made her debut at her new home in the zoo’s African Savannah May 7. The 25-year-old female African elephant, which arrived at the zoo in February, had been living in a private facility. When the U.S. Department of Agriculture determined that conditions there were not meeting her needs, they chose the Toledo Zoo to house her, due in part to its reputation for excellent elephant care.

When she arrived, she was noticeably thinner than other female elephants her age, and she exhibited certain stereotypic behaviors, most notably rocking. Twiggy underwent an initial quarantine period then began the process of being introduced to her new home and the zoo’s elephants, 7-year-old Louie and his mother, 31-year-old Renee.  Twiggy has been under the care of the zoo’s elephant and veterinary staff, receiving the ideal nutrition and foot care. In her time at the zoo, Twiggy has gained about 500 pounds and her behavior has demonstrated that she is adjusting very well to her new environment and level of care. In addition, her stereotypic behaviors have been markedly reduced.

The introductions are going very well, especially considering that Twiggy had not been in a social situation for quite a while, the zoo staff reports.

Twiggy has been living in the recently completed first phase of the zoo’s new elephant facility, which will offer the elephants great opportunities for enrichment, exercise and overall care. The facility was made possible through funding from the 2006 Capital Levy supported by Lucas County voters.

There’s a new queen of baby names. Isabella took the crown from last year’s winner, Emma, to claim the top girl baby name of 2009, Social Security reports.

Jacob continued his remarkable run by holding onto the top boy name for the 11th year in a row over a new number two for boys, Ethan. New to the top 10 this year for boys are Jayden and Noah, and for girls, Mia.

The top girls’ names, in order of popularity include Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava, Emily, Madison, Abigail, Chloe and Mia. For boys, top names were Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Alexander, William, Joshua, Daniel, Jayden, Noah and Anthony.

A favorite feature of Social Security’s baby names website is the “Change in Name Popularity” page. This year’s winner for the biggest jump is Maliyah, which undoubtedly is related to the popularity of the First Family. Malia (the spelling used by the First Daughter), also is one of the top 10 fastest risers among girls names.
