The calendar says Thanksgiving is still more than a week away, but for the Allgier family, 2008 has already brought many reasons to be grateful and count their blessings.

Press readers may remember the story about Teresa Allgier, of Elmore, who gave birth to twins in October 2007 after having been diagnosed with breast cancer. The surprise news of her pregnancy came in February as she was in the operating room being prepped for a mastectomy.

The question seems innocent enough, yet it gave me a wicked case of the goose bumps.

It started when a press release came across my desk for a psychic health fair that was coming up in Fremont. The notice said there would be an “animal communicator” there, in addition to a medium, card readers and a palmist, among others.

`Tis the season for caring and sharing and the Aurora House, which offers new beginnings to homeless women and their children, is looking for volunteers interested in helping to make the holidays brighter for residents working to make a clean, fresh start in life.

“The holiday season can be a difficult time for some of our residents and their children,” said Mary Ann Wasserman, Aurora’s Christmas coordinator. “Our desire is to bring a little light and further the message of hope.”
