Timing is everything, as the popular saying goes, but as most parents of babies

Like a good little soldier, Makenna Katherine Wilson
(held by her mother Kayte) seemed to make her debut
on cue, just as her daddy, Steve, returned home on
leave from Iraq, where he is serving with the 1483rd
Transportation Company, based in Walbridge.

will attest, little ones generally operate on their own timetables.

However, Little Makenna Katherine Wilson seems to have taken a cue from her mother as to the timing of her much-awaited arrival.

Makenna’s father Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Steve Wilson is with the 1483rd Transportation Company out of Walbridge, which was deployed to Iraq in August. As with any deployment, it was difficult saying goodbye to loved ones and friends, but this time, Wilson was facing the possibility of missing the birth of his first child, due Oct. 25.

“It wasn’t ideal, but he had been deployed to Kosovo during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2004-05 and to Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and we knew we’d get through it,” Steve’s wife Kayte said.

“I am lucky to have lots of family and friends for support,” she said. “And we hoped that there’d be a good chance that Steve might be able to get a leave around the baby’s due date, being that they had just gotten to Iraq and not many people would want to take their leave so soon.”

Steve was able to plan a leave that would allow him to return to northwest Ohio on Oct. 18. “I was scheduled to be induced Oct. 20, which would give us a couple of days to get ready after he got home,” Kayte said. “Or so we thought.”

It was a day Emily Kehlmeier won’t forget.

Sgt. Todd Mocniak, with Emily’s purple and white
Schwinn bicycle, which was recovered, restored
and returned to her after it was stolen.

Like she had many days before, Emily had ridden her purple and white Schwinn bicycle to work at Millers New Market in Genoa, where she is a bagger and helps customers carrying their purchases to their vehicles.

Emily, 30, has Downs syndrome and relied on the bike to get to and from work and around the village.

On this day last August, Emily came out of the store and discovered that her bike was gone.

“I was very upset,” she said. “I had that bike for a very long time – I got it 18 years ago.”

Emily reported the missing bike to the police. Genoa Police Sgt. Todd Mocniak investigated the theft, but there were few leads to follow.

On Sept. 24, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a local farmer that he found a bike leaning against a telephone pole near the intersection of Deno and Ernsthausen roads, about four miles from where the bike had been stolen.

Memorial Health Care System’s latest construction project began the week of January 4, when employees from Mosser Construction began renovating space in the hospital that was previously used to store medical records.

The renovation will create space for the Women’s Diagnostic Center, which will feature digital mammography, a DEXA (bone density) scanner and ultrasound capability.

According to Memorial Hospital Imaging Director Karen Darr, “We are extremely excited about this project; digital mammography is an excellent addition to Memorial’s health-care services.”

Construction of the 1,200 square-foot space will take approximately 10 to 12 weeks and cost approximately $600,000, including the new equipment.
